Who is sybarite

Who is sybarite? You may not hear this word so often, but knowing its meaning, you can not only expand your vocabulary, but in certain situations, more accurately express your own thoughts.

In this article we will tell you what sybarite means and in relation to whom it is permissible to use this term.

Who are the sybarites

Sybarite is an idle person spoiled by luxury. In simple terms, sybarite is one who lives "in a grand style" and loves to spend time in pleasure.

An interesting fact is that this concept is derived from the name of the ancient Greek colony Sybaris, famous for its wealth and luxury. The inhabitants of the colony lived in complete protection and comfort, as a result of which they loved to lead an idle life.

Today, sybarites are people who are dependent on their parents or simply live at someone else's expense. They prefer to dress in branded clothes, own expensive cars, wear jewelry and visit high-end restaurants.

In addition, modern sybarites, and in fact majors, like to visit prestigious nightclubs, where the entire elite gathers. As a rule, they do not strive for self-development, since all they care about is fun.

Sybarite and hedonist

It is believed that "sybarite" and "hedonist" are synonymous. Let's see if this is really so.

Hedonism is a philosophical teaching according to which pleasure for a person is the meaning of life. At first glance, it may seem that the Sybarites and hedonists are one type of people, but this is not entirely true.

Although hedonists also strive for pleasure, unlike sybarites, they earn money with their own hands. Thus, they are not supported by someone and are well aware of how hard it is to get money.

Moreover, in addition to leading an idle life, hedonists can get carried away with art, buying, for example, expensive paintings or antiques. That is, they buy something not because it has external beauty, but because it is of cultural value.

From all that has been said, we can conclude that a hedonist is a person for whom the meaning of life is to achieve pleasure. At the same time, he himself is ready to work for the realization of some idea, not hoping for the help of others.

In turn, sybarite is a person who does not want to do anything, but only idly spend all his time. He lives at the expense of others, considering it quite normal.
