What is tolerance

What is tolerance? This word can be often heard from people, as well as found on the Internet. Surely many of you have heard phrases such as "tolerant attitude" or "you are not tolerant of me."

In this article we will tell you what this term means, as well as in what cases it should be used.

What does tolerance mean?

Translated from Latin, the word "tolerance" literally means "patience." Tolerance is a concept that denotes tolerance for a different worldview, lifestyle, behavior and traditions.

It is worth noting that tolerance is not the same thing as indifference. It also does not mean acceptance of a different worldview or behavior, but only consists in giving others the right to live as they see fit.

For example, there are people next to us who have the opposite view of religion, politics or morality, but this does not mean that they are bad just because they have a different worldview.

Quite the opposite, tolerance means respect, acceptance and correct understanding of other cultures, as well as the manifestation of human individuality. At the same time, the manifestation of tolerance does not at all mean tolerance of social injustice, rejection of one's own views or imposing one's views on others.

But here it is important to divide tolerance into general and particular. You can tolerate a criminal - this is private, but not the crime itself - this is general.

For example, a man stole food in order to feed his children. You can show regret and understanding (tolerance) to such a person, but the very fact of theft should not be so regarded, otherwise anarchy will begin in the world.

An interesting fact is that tolerance manifests itself in a variety of areas: politics, medicine, religion, pedagogy, education, psychology and many other areas.

So, in simple terms, tolerance is manifested in tolerance towards people and the recognition of their right to freedom of their own views, customs, religion, etc. At the same time, you can disagree with the ideas of the person and even challenge them, while remaining tolerant of the individual himself.
