What does apathy mean

What is apathy? Today this word has become widespread both in colloquial speech and on the Internet. However, many people still do not know the true meaning of this term.

In this article, we will explain what apathy is and who is affected by it.

What does apathy mean

Apathy is a symptom that is expressed in complete indifference and indifference to the events taking place around, as well as in the absence of the manifestation of emotions and the desire for any activity.

A person prone to apathy ceases to be interested in even those things without which he could not do without (hobbies, entertainment, work, communication). In some cases, people even stop taking care of themselves: shaving, washing clothes, washing, etc.

The appearance of apathy can be facilitated by such factors as: depression, schizophrenia, a malfunction in the central nervous system, endocrine disorders, the use of psychotropic drugs, drug or alcohol dependence, as well as a number of other reasons.

It is worth noting that apathy can also be observed in quite healthy people due to, for example, low social or professional activity. It can also be the result of physical overwork or stress, which can be caused by the death of a loved one, problems in personal life, loss of work, etc.

How to get rid of apathy

First of all, a person suffering from apathy should give his body a rest. He should avoid new stressful situations, alternate work with rest, get enough sleep and stick to a proper diet.

In addition, walks in the fresh air and sports can be of great benefit. Thanks to this, a person will be able to escape from problems and switch to another type of activity.

However, in the event that an individual suffers from a severe form of apathy, he should definitely seek help from a psychotherapist or psychiatrist. A good specialist will be able to make the correct diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

Perhaps the patient will need to drink certain drugs, or maybe it will be enough for him to just go through several sessions with a psychotherapist. It is important to understand that the sooner a person seeks help, the sooner they can return to their normal life.
