What is sovereignty? This word can often be heard in the news on TV, as well as in the press or on the Internet. And yet, not everyone understands what the true meaning is hidden under this term.
In this article, we will explain what is meant by the word "sovereignty".
What does sovereignty mean
Sovereignty (fr. souveraineté - supreme power, domination) is the independence of the state in external affairs and the supremacy of state power in the internal structure.
Today, the concept of state sovereignty is also used to denote this term, to distinguish it from the terms of national and popular sovereignty.
What is the manifestation of the sovereignty of the state
Sovereignty within the state is expressed in the following features:
- the exclusive right of the government to represent all citizens of the country;
- all social, political, cultural, sports and many other organizations are subject to the decisions of the authorities;
- the state is the author of bills to which all citizens and organizations, without exception, must obey;
- the government has all the levers of influence that are inaccessible to other subjects: the possibility of declaring a state of emergency, conducting military or military operations, imposing sanctions, etc.
From a legal point of view, the main manifestation of sovereignty or supremacy of state power is the main role on the country's territory of the Constitution adopted by it. In addition, state sovereignty is the country's independence on the world stage.
That is, the country's government itself chooses the course along which it is going to develop, not allowing anyone to impose its will. In simple terms, the sovereignty of the state is expressed in the independent choice of the form of government, monetary system, observance of the rule of law, management of the army, etc.
The state that acts at the direction of a third party is not sovereign, but is a colony. In addition, there are such concepts as - the sovereignty of the nation and the sovereignty of the people. Both terms mean that a nation or people have the right to self-determination, which can manifest itself in different ways.
