What does fiasco mean?

What does fiasco mean?? This word has been used by people for more than one century. However, not everyone knows what it means and in what areas it can be applied.

In this article we will tell you what fiasco means and give clear examples of the use of this expression.

What is a fiasco

In the modern sense, a fiasco is a failure, collapse, or complete failure. Today there is a stable expression - "to fail", which means to suffer complete and unconditional defeat in something.

This word came to us from the Italian language. It is curious that in Italy the fiasco is called a large bottle braided with straw. But why, in fact, the "bottle", and moreover an Italian one, became the prototype of failure?

This is due to the story of a harlequin named Bianconelli who performed on the theater stage in Florence. The artist often used various objects in the numbers, through which he amused the audience.

Once he went on stage with a bottle, trying to make the audience laugh again. However, no matter how Bianconelli tried to amuse the people, all his jokes failed. As a result, the harlequin became desperate and smashed the bottle on the floor.

After that, in Italian cities, such an expression appeared as "the Bianconelli fiasco", which they began to call unsuccessful performances or performances of the artist. Over time, the name of the harlequin disappeared, while the fiasco was firmly entrenched in the lexicon.

It is worth noting that today a fiasco means a failure on an especially large scale. That is, a humiliating failure in which it is no longer possible to correct the situation.

For example: "Fascist Germany suffered a crushing fiasco in World War II." "The politician faced a fiasco in the presidential elections."
