Anatoly Timofeevich Fomenko (born 1945) - Soviet and Russian mathematician, graphic artist, specialist in differential geometry and topology, theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras, symplectic and computer geometry, theory of Hamiltonian dynamical systems. Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Fomenko became popular thanks to "New chronology" - a concept according to which the existing chronology of historical events is incorrect and requires a radical revision. The overwhelming majority of professional historians and representatives of a number of other sciences call the "New Chronology" a pseudoscience.
There are many interesting facts in the biography of Anatoly Fomenko, which we will discuss in this article.
So, before you is a short biography of Fomenko.
Biography of Anatoly Fomenko
Anatoly Fomenko was born on March 13, 1945 in Ukrainian Donetsk. He grew up in an intelligent and educated family. His father was a candidate of technical sciences, and his mother worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature.
Childhood and youth
When Anatoly was about 5 years old, he and his family moved to Magadan and there he went to the 1st grade. In 1959 the family settled in Lugansk, where the future scientist graduated with honors from high school.
An interesting fact is that over the years of his school biography, Fomenko became the winner of the All-Union Correspondence Olympiad in Mathematics, and was also twice awarded bronze medals at VDNKh.
Even in his youth, he took up writing, as a result of which at the end of the 50s his fantastic work The Secret of the Milky Way was published in the Pionerskaya Pravda edition.
Having received a certificate, Anatoly Fomenko successfully passed the exams at Moscow State University, choosing the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics. A couple of years after graduation, he got a job at his home university at the Department of Differential Geometry.
At the age of 25, Anatoly managed to defend his candidate's dissertation, and 2 years later, his doctoral dissertation, on the topic "The solution of the multidimensional Plateau problem on Riemannian manifolds."
Scientific activity
In 1981 Fomenko became a professor at Moscow State University. In 1992, after the collapse of the USSR, he was entrusted to head the Department of Differential Geometry and Applications of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics.
In subsequent years, Anatoly Fomenko held many prestigious positions at Moscow State University, and also served on various commissions. In addition, he served on the editorial boards of a number of mathematics-related publications.
In 1993 Fomenko became a member of the International Higher Education Academy of Sciences. He was recognized as one of the best specialists in the country in various fields of mathematics, including differential geometry and topology, theory of Lie groups and algebras, mathematical physics, computer geometry, etc.
Anatoly Timofeevich was able to substantiate the presence of a global minimum “spectral surface”, in advance limited by a given “contour”. In the field of topology, he discovered invariants by means of which it was possible to describe the topological type of singularities of dynamical systems. By that time, he was already an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Over the years of his biography, Anatoly Fomenko became the author of 280 scientific works, including about three dozen monographs and 10 textbooks and teaching aids in mathematics. An interesting fact is that the works of the scientist have been translated into many languages of the world.
More than 60 candidate and doctoral dissertations were defended under the direct supervision of the professor. In the spring of 2009 he was elected a member of the Russian Academy of Technological Sciences.
New chronology
However, the greatest popularity of Anatoly Fomenko was brought not by his achievements in the field of mathematics, but by a number of works, united under the name "New Chronology". It is worth noting that this work was created in collaboration with the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences Gleb Nosovskiy.
The New Chronology (NX) is considered a pseudoscientific theory of a global revision of world history. It is criticized by the scientific community, including historians, archaeologists, mathematicians, chemists, philologists and other scientists.
The theory argues that today's chronology of historical events is altogether incorrect, and that the written history of mankind is substantially shorter than generally believed and does not trace beyond the 10th century AD.
The authors of "NH" argue that ancient civilizations and medieval states are "phantom reflections" of much later cultures inscribed in world history due to erroneous interpretation of sources.
In this regard, Fomenko and Nosovsky described their idea of the history of mankind, which is based on the theory of the existence in the Middle Ages of a majestic empire on the territory of Russia, covering almost all of modern Europe and Asia. Men explain the contradictions between "NH" and generally accepted historical facts by the global falsification of historical documents.
As of today, over a hundred books have been published according to the New Chronology, with a total circulation of about 1 million copies. In 2004, Anatoly Fomenko and Gleb Nosovskiy were awarded the “Paragraph” anti-prize in the “Honorary ignorance” category for the cycle of works on NZ.
Personal life
The mathematician's wife is the mathematician Tatyana Nikolaevna, who is 3 years younger than her husband. It is worth noting that the woman participated in the writing of some sections of the books on "NH".
Anatoly Fomenko today
Anatoly Timofeevich continues his teaching career, actively delivering lectures on various topics. From time to time he takes part in various programs, where he acts as an expert.
