Trivial and non-trivial

Trivial and non-trivial - these words we often hear from people or meet in literature. However, not all people understand the true meaning of these terms. Many confuse them with other concepts, as a result of which they fail to grasp the true meaning of this or that phrase.

In this article we will explain what is meant by triviality and non-triviality.

What is triviality and nontriviality

Triviality - extreme simplification. The concept is often used in mathematics in relation to the simplest objects. It is worth noting that triviality has no universal definition.

In colloquial speech, many people use this term in cases when they want to speak about something in a negative light. As a result, the concept of "triviality" has become synonymous with words such as - banality, primitiveness or obviousness.

Thus, “trivial” information is devoid of any freshness, originality or novelty. Today the word triviality is used in a derogatory sense. To point out to a person his triviality means to accuse him of banality and stereotyped thinking.

Therefore, this word should be used with caution, so as not to offend or embarrass the person. It will be enough just to note its triviality.

For example, when a problem arises, such a person may say some obvious things that do not contribute to its solution. This can be explained with the following example:

While driving, one wheel suddenly falls off the car. The driver has a spare, but no bolts to screw it on. In this case, a trivial person will say banal things: "somehow you need to attach the wheel" or "the car will not go without the wheel."

In contrast, non-trivial the person will immediately try to solve the problem. He can remove one bolt from each wheel and use them to install a spare fourth wheel. At least by moving forward carefully, he will be able to get to the nearest service station.

From the above, we can conclude that the word - "non-trivial" has the opposite meaning. That is, a non-trivial person is an intelligent, resourceful and interesting individual.

Also, an idea, action, aphorism, etc. can be non-trivial. That is, something that is distinguished by originality and novelty - an innovative approach to business, devoid of any stereotypes or cliches.
